Dominating the biggest part of Hvar’s plain, not far from Stari Grad is located the biggest village on the island, Vrbanj. Being in the center of the island, a long time ago it served as a good shelter from pirates, and that’s why the structures of the houses with fortifications and loopholes, which were built in the 16th and 17th century, are so interesting. From Vrbanj you can go for a picnic on the highest peak on the island called St. Nikola (628 m) on top of which is located the small church of St. Nicolas.
